NAME: TOURISM IN MAJORCA, 1958

Since the 1950’s the advent of mass tourism has transformed the island. Social and economic expansion in Europe meant more leisure time and better paid holidays. Majorca was a very close and cheap tourist destination for Europeans. In 1950 98.000 tourists visited Majorca , 23% of them from abroad. In 1950 the Balearics had accomodation capacity  of 4.054 hotel beds.The tourism boom meant the starting point of Majorca’s social and economic expansion. In 1959 321.000 tourists visited the island, 80% of them from abroad. In 1963 there were 789 hotels and  accomodation capacity  of  38.512 beds
