NAME: THE SÓLLER RAILWAY

Taking a trip on the Sóller train is traveling through time. In this train we will come back to the early twentieth century, when 150 residents led by Jeroni Estades managed to collect an initial capital of 3,100,000 pesetas to achieve one goal: to connect the town of Sóller with the rest of the island (until that time the only alternative routes were the Coll of Sóller or Deia road, both routes with more than a dozen hairpin turns). In less than five years they executed a complicated infrastructure that required the drilling of thirteen tunnels, one of them 2,876 meters long, to overcome the geographical barrier of the Serra d'Alfàbia. Hundred years have passed since then but the train still operates daily the route Palma-Bunyola-Sóller, although its travelers have changed. No longer are mostly residents of Sóller but tourists. The train, operated by a private company has become one of the greatest tourist attractions of the island. The course is complemented by the tram that takes visitors to the Port of Sóller. Since October 1913 the electric tram runs along the five kilometers to reach the coast between orange and lemon trees groves.
